Learning English with Adele

Adele set fire to the rain 16I don’t know about you, but I absolutely love Adele. Not only has she got a great voice, her lyrics and melodies resonate with so many people. All her songs are special but I find this one: “Set Fire to the Rain” especially powerful.

I therefore decided that I wanted to share the song with you. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, songs are a wonderfully fun way for learners to practise their listening and pronunciation skills.

In this song, there are many parts of the body that are mentioned. I have blanked out all references to them from the lyrics. I have listed them at the end, though, in no particular order.

This is what I’d like you to do:

1. Listen to the song and just enjoy it.
2. Listen again and this time follow the song with the lyrics and try to complete the gaps with the parts of the body listed below.
3. Listen again and check your answers.
4. Finally, close your eyes and enjoy!

Lyrics
I let it fall, my           ,
And as it fell you rose to claim it
It was dark and I was over
Until you kissed my              and you saved me
My          , they’re strong
But my              were far too weak,
To stand in your
Without falling to your              But there’s a side to you
That I never knew, never knew.
All the things you’d say
They were never true, never true,
And the games you play
You would always win, always win.
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your                ,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!
When I lay with you
I could stay there
Close my
Feel you here forever
You and me together
Nothing is better
‘Cause there’s a side to you
That I never knew, never knew,
All the things you’d say,
They were never true, never true,
And the games you’d play
You would always win, always win.
But I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your              ,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name!
I set fire to the rain
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
‘Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time!
Sometimes I wake up by the door,
That               you caught must be waiting for you
Even now when we’re already over
I can’t help myself from looking for you.
I set fire to the rain,
Watched it pour as I touched your             ,
Well, it burned while I cried
‘Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name
I set fire to the rain,
And I threw us into the flames
When it fell, something died
‘Cause I knew that that was the last time, the last time, ohhhh!
Oh noooo
Let it burn, oh
Let it burn
Let it burn
