The English-speaking audience wasn’t expecting much, but then I began to speak!

That moment when your audience is hanging on to your every word and wants more. And you realise you have it in you to deliver a 10-minute business talk in English confidently and effortlessly and get the results you’re seeking.

You know.

❏ An increase in orders for your new product

❏ An invitation to pitch for that contract your company really wants

❏ Your clients finally moving from face to face training to your new online training platform

❏ Convincing management to accept your budget proposal

❏ Being admired and respected for your professionalism and competence

But how do you achieve this in just 10 minutes when most of the time you feel the words don’t flow, you can’t find the appropriate vocabulary and you’re not sure if your audience follows your train of thought?

You write first what you want to talk about.

Here’s how business writing helps you give that talk:

Writing helps you tidy up all your thoughts before you speak.

No more losing your train of thought when you’re mid-flow.

Writing makes you think of your audience and adapt your message to them.

It shows your human side, it shows you care about them and not just your message. And in return they respond with appreciation.

Writing gives you a roadmap of where you want to start and to finish.

There’s no better feeling  than knowing where you want to lead your audience and how to lead them. And in return you have a grateful listener who’s followed what you have to say easily.

Writing gives you the time to select the right vocabulary and check your grammar before you deliver your talk.

No more hesitating as you scramble for the correct word or panicking when you see a confused look from your audience because you’ve used the wrong English tense.

Writing helps you save time and energy.

What used to take 30 minutes to get your message across now takes you 10 minutes. Less time, less mental energy and a grateful audience.

You don’t have to do this alone.

Let me tell you about Luisa…

She approached me last summer to help her prepare for the most important job interview of her career. A job that would take her abroad and would challenge her in every respect. She’d worked hard for this opportunity and didn’t want to fail.

She wanted me to help her, in her words “to be concise, convincing, to the point, serious without being boring, not speaking too much (which is one of my main problems)”.

She had already started preparing for the questions which included questions like:

Tell me about yourself.

Why are you a good candidate for this position.

Tell me about your experience and demonstrated ability in the areas of business development and acquisition.

Luisa needed to talk about ONE topic – herself. She didn’t want to ramble on too much. She needed be clear, concise and impress her audience (interviewer).

(A word about rambling. Rambling is very normal. It happens because we haven’t structured our ideas clearly and concisely enough before speaking. So what happens is that we’re thinking while speaking and what comes out of our mouth is a lot of uhms and errs, distracted thought and going off the point. That can be frustrating not only for you, but especially for your listener. This happens to all of us regardless of what language we’re using to communicate. However, in our first language we have techniques to help us deal with that moment when we’re trying to organise our thoughts before we articulate them. But in another language, we need to find another way that’s more comfortable and above all, less stressful.)

So, we looked at writing to help Luisa clarify her thoughts, structure them in a coherent way, choose her vocabulary carefully and stay focused. We worked together over 4 1-hour sessions. Before each session, she would prepare her assignment and send it to me via Google Docs. She would then present it to me verbally and I would give her detailed feedback and challenge her with more questions.

At the end of the programme, not only did Luisa’s writing and fluency improve, she also felt confident and good about her professional ability. She told me later, “the most important help I got from you was to clearly see the value I could bring to the job I was applying for, and boost my self-confidence as a professional.” Isn’t that priceless?

During the interview, she felt comfortable when replying to the questions and actually enjoyed herself! That’s because she had focused on one topic alone and ensured she was completely prepared for it.

The result?

She got the job!
