Whom is it for?

Whom is it for?

This programme is for you if:

  • You’re a senior business professional
  • You use English to communicate with your co-workers every day
  • You already know the basics of English grammar and have a reasonable vocabulary
  • It’s expected from someone with your seniority level to communicate confidently in English or you need good English skills to advance your career
  • You’re tired of stumbling over words when communicating in English and want to lead business meetings, conduct negotiations or deliver presentations in English as confidently as you do it in your native language

Meet your coach

I am Shanthi Cumaraswamy Streat, a certified Business English Coach.

Before becoming a language coach, I spent 20 years in the corporate world of finance and was surprised to see that the coursebooks used in Business English classrooms didn’t reflect reality.

I knew that effective communication wasn’t about how many big words you knew or how perfect your grammar was. It was about speaking the language of your audience, actively listening to them, and tuning your ear to their accents and language level.

But no coursebook I ever saw covered these key communication skills.

The more I worked with my clients, the more I realised that they were already highly competent speakers of English. They didn’t need to speak more. Yet, they needed to learn how to communicate effectively with the English skills they had.

That’s why instead of speaking more, I’ll encourage you to reflect on how you communicate. And as you reflect, record and analyse how you communicate, we’ll be able to make small but powerful changes that will boost your confidence and help you achieve your career goals.

“Thanks to Shanthi, I got a new job”

Shanthi’s expertise as an English teacher, her solid corporate background, her capacity to understand my value as a professional and help me see it, her amazing ability to motivate me and make me believe in my skills, helped me prepare for my job interview in a way I couldn’t possibly do on my own. And thanks to Shanti, I got the job.

“I can now confidently lead a discussion in English”

At the end of my stay with Shanthi, I saw considerable progress and gained confidence. Now, I don’t avoid the conversations in English and am even able to lead discussions myself. Shanti gave me the keys to successful business communication in English, and I am very grateful to her for it.

My approach

Immersing yourself in a language is the most efficient and fastest way to improve your English.

Yet, focusing on grammar, listening skills or your vocabulary alone won’t help you communicate more effectively at work. You will get more tools, but you may still not know how to use them.

During this programme, I won’t ask you to follow any textbooks. Instead, we’ll be following a personal programme I’ll create just for you.

Before you arrive, I’ll send you a questionnaire that helps me understand your current situation, what is holding you back, and what you’d like to achieve. Among other things, I’ll ask you:

  • What are your role and daily tasks in your company?
  • Who are your colleagues?
  • What are your communication habits?
  • What are your biggest challenges when speaking English?

Based on your answers, I’ll create an individual programme that will help us break your harmful communication patterns and adopt effective new habits that will help you become an effective communicator at work.

Have an important meeting two weeks from now? Have a job interview with a big company? I’ll help you prepare so you’ll walk in radiating confidence and walk out feeling proud of what you’ve achieved.

We will work on other things too, but we’ll focus on the “now” – specific and time-sensitive challenges you need to overcome in your job today.

Your Stay

You’ll be staying in our house in Orpington, a town on the border between London and Kent with myself, my husband David and our dog Buster.

You’ll have your own double bedroom with a private bathroom, but you’ll also be a part of our home life. You’re more than welcome to join us in the TV room for a movie night, give Buster company on his daily walks or use our cross-trainer.

We’ll dedicate 20 hours a week to the lessons. Here’s how your typical day will look like:

08:00 – 08:45  Breakfast with David and me

09:00 – 11:00  Lessons

11:00 – 11:20  Coffee break

11:20 – 13:00  Lessons

13:00 – 14:00  Lunch with us

The rest of the day is free for you to do homework, work, visit London, etc.

20:00 – Dinner with us.

“Now I know how to communicate effectively”

Our lessons have helped me a lot. I definitely expanded my vocabulary but it wasn’t the main goal. Thanks to Shanthi, I realized that I am not so bad. She immediately pointed out to me that I don’t have to expect perfection. The important thing is to know how to communicate, and that to do it in the working environment I don’t need a huge vocabulary. Shanthi helped me focus on what I really need.

“I became more confident in my English skills”

Shanthi, with her great skills and empathy, helped me improve the presentation of my business, not only from a linguistic point of view, but also conceptually. Thanks to her generosity and the magical versatility, I was able to become more confident in my English skills.

What’s the accommodation like?

You’ll have a double bedroom with a queen size bed, a private bathroom and a view overlooking the garden and the woods. The area we live in is very quiet.
