“I need you to call an important Italian client and discuss his investment portfolio in Italian.

Can you do that?”

Err…yes, of course but thinking to myself, OMG! How am I going to do this?

Shanthi Cumaraswamy Streat
(Business English Coach)

What I was thinking?

I speak General Italian but I have never used the language in business.
I don’t have the specialist language.
I am not sure about my grammar, using the right vocabulary and register (more formal in Italian than in English)
I have to speak on the phone without the benefit of face to face interaction.
I don’t want to make a bad impression (not professional) in front of my co-workers and client.
I am scared of making mistakes with my Italian (bad grammar, wrong vocabulary). It’s going to look so bad.
I am afraid my client won’t understand me (unclear message) and that could cost our company a lot of money. Very risky.

How did I feel?

I felt vulnerable, powerless and inferior to my own self.
I could easily do my job in English, but in Italian it felt like climbing Mount Everest – impossible.
I felt like such a failure.

Fast forward 10 years – leaving the Finance world and becoming an English language trainer

I recall the “Italian episode”and decide there and then that I am going to help English learning professionals feel confident, positive and empowered when communicating in business with English.
I don’t want professionals like you to feel how I felt that time – powerless, foolish and inferior.
I know what it takes to make a good impression at a job interview, to give an excellent presentation, to make a winning argument in negotiations, to close that sale or to write a persuasive email.
These are key business skills that we all need to achieve career success. It takes time, practice and above all, perseverance but we’ve all managed to master them somehow.
But I want you to master these skills in English, too.
A language you probably studied at school many years ago, used occasionally on holiday to order the odd coffee or two or use sporadically with your co-workers in emails and conference calls.
And that was ok but now things are different.
Now you have an important role in your company, you need to communicate much more effectively in English. Your message needs to be crystal clear. If it isn’t, the next co-worker with better English skills will take over your role.

I don’t want you to feel less than equal because of your English.

You deserve so much more.

Why did I start English with a Twist?

My name is Shanthi Cumaraswamy Streat…

I am passionate about transforming English Learning professionals into confident, effective and successful business communicators in English.
I spent 20 years in the finance world before retraining as a Business English Trainer in 2010.
I am the living example that a new, flourishing career can start in your mid-40s and that you’re never too old to learn new things.
I am half Sri Lankan/Malaysian, half Italian. I was born in London (by chance), grew up in Malaysia and Italy and have lived in the UK since 1985 (when I attended university).
My family is scattered around the globe – Malaysia, Italy and California (with links to Barbados) making the word “globe-trotting” truly meaningful to our family.
I am wife to an Englishman, aunt to five gorgeous nephews and ‘mummy’ to our pet dog “Buster”.
I am an ex-cancer sufferer who used her illness to turn her life and career around.
If I don’t have a book to read, I feel lost.
I go running (ok, snail jogging!) three times a week.
I’ve been trying to start yoga and meditation for years but who knows…maybe my sixth decade ( I am in my 50s) is the time I finally start and persevere)
I enjoy ironing and housework ( I know….I am weird, but I find it mind-numbing which is a welcome distraction after work where my brain never stops ticking).
I love foreign cinema and grab any chance I can to go to the theatre.
My mantra in life is live for the moment and seize every moment to learn and grow. We’re never too old to learn something new every day no matter how small. That’s what makes life so precious.
Why not join the fast-growing EWAT community of professionals and start the journey on finally feeling equal in English?
I can’t wait to see you there.
